Ara Macao Resort & Marina

The Land of Ohs and Ahs.

Belize is the place where you’ll find yourself doing things you never imagined. We call it being comfortably outside of your comfort zone. It just happens. Whether it’s tubing through dark passages of an underground cave, diving with a friendly whale shark around the blue hole or exploring a rainforest in search of undiscovered Mayan ruins, Belize has a magical ability to simply transform people, helping them shed layers from their normal lives and escape into new experiences and adventures that they’ll carry with them for a lifetime.

The list of activities is endless but we’ve highlighted a few
of our favorites below:

Scuba Diving & Snorkeling - The world's second-largest Barrier Reef is right at your doorstep. Three of the only four atolls in the Western Hemisphere await your exploration, as do the hundreds of tiny islands nearby. Dive with turtles, eagle rays and even the magnificent whale shark.

What sets diving in Belize apart is that often you will be the only divers, not sharing a reef with dozens of other groups. Swim amidst the beautiful coral formations and the abundant, colorful marine life.

Fishing - Choose from deep sea, fly, trolling and bone fishing. It is possible to catch many different species, such as tuna, grouper and snapper, in a multitude of different locations.

Jaguar Preserve & Cockscomb Basin - Hike along trails
into the highlands of the Belize rainforest near Victoria’s Peak, the highest mountain peak in Belize. Track the paw prints of the Jaguar and other rainforest creatures. And learn about medicinal plants, the ecology, and various animal species.

Mayan Temples - Witness temples to rival those at Machu Pichu in Peru and explore the caves at Blue Creek or Rio Blanco waterfalls. There are fascinating sites located at Lubaantun, Nim Li Punit and the Tapir Reserve.

Monkey River - To the south of the Belize Reserve, you’ll find Monkey River, a birdwatcher’s paradise reached by boat through the tropical river. Much of Monkey River has been declared a Special Conservation Area, with howler monkeys and toucans in the tropical rainforest canopy and manatee at the mouth of the river.

San Ignacio – Nearby, the town of San Ignacio presents an excellent variety of shops, bars and restaurants.

Sea Kayaking - Belize is one of the premier sea kayaking destinations in the world. Enjoy day outings into the crystal clear Caribbean or explore the calm lagoon behind
Placencia, where you may even spot a manatee. For those more adventurous, plan a multi-day sea kayaking
adventure between the closely spaced tranquil islands just off of Placencia. Snorkel right off your kayak!

Sailing - Sailing conditions are amazing! No wonder The Moorings decided to call Placencia their base in Belize. Calm, crystal clear waters, accompanied by a steady breeze makes this an ideal place for sailing. Come explore the hundreds of uninhabited islands and be Robinson Crusoe for a while. Placencia offers excellent protective harbors.

Wind Surfing & Kite Surfing - An as-yet-untapped sport in Placencia, the calm waters and steady trade winds create an ideal environment for wind surfing and kite surfing. New outfitters are just starting to set up shop and offer instructions.

Caving - Belize has evolved into an international caving (spelunking) destination. Hire a guide and explore recently discovered, magnificent caves. Tubing through unique underground rivers is a specialty of Belize.

White Water Rafting - Fast-moving runoff waters from the mountains of Belize create some very exciting river rafting. Come discover the Belize River, the Macaw River, the Mopan and the Caves Branch River (offering an underground adventure with some five miles running through a cave system).

Bike Riding (Racing) - Mountain bikes are a great way to explore the Peninsula. Or, for those more into the "real deal," Belize offers several pro-attended road races. The annual Holly Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic takes place on Easter weekend and is a 144-mile challenge from Belize City to San Ignacio and back. International Pro Racers, including various Tour de France participants, tackle this event every year.

Off-road racers are also challenged. The Temple to Temple Race, for instance, is a world-class mountain biking endurance event spanning seven days and 750 kilometers. The inaugural event kicked off in 2005, crisscrossing Belize and finishing in Placencia. Plenty of activities, even for those of the hardcore persuasion!

Birding - Belize is home to 566 biologically diverse bird species. Try to spot the beautiful toucan (Belize's national bird), a parrot or even our namesake, the scarlet macaw.

Hiking - The possibilities are endless. Stroll along the peaceful beach during an amazing Caribbean sunset; go explore the jungle; or hike through one of the many national parks or preserves all within a 2-hour drive of Placencia. Placencia is also an excellent starting point for tackling Victoria Peak -- Belize's highest peak.
